Local SEO for contractors

For trades that go to the customer. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, remodeling and the rest.

Contractors are not storefronts

Most local SEO advice is written for a shop with a door customers walk through. A contractor drives to the customer. That changes how the Google Business Profile should be set up, which pages your site needs, and how you should think about towns you serve but are not based in.

It also changes what counts as a win. A contractor does not want visits. A contractor wants the phone to ring for the jobs that pay, in the towns worth driving to.

What this looks like for a trade

  • A service-area profile done right. Address hidden if you work from home, the service area set to where you really go, and the primary category for your main trade.
  • A page for each job. Water heater replacement and drain cleaning are different searches from different customers. Each gets its own page.
  • Area pages with something real on them. Here is why most area pages get ignored, and what the ones that rank have in common.
  • Photos of your own work. On the profile and the pages. A finished job, a truck, a crew. Never stock.
  • Reviews after every job. A text or card at the end of each job, inside Google's rules. How to get more reviews.

Who is behind it

Nathan Synoground has run $2.8M in home services and contractor ads across 43 accounts, and $3.8M across 19 HVAC, plumbing and electrical accounts. In 2025 and 2026 he started and grew multiple contractor companies from zero to a million in revenue with Google Ads, Facebook Ads and SEO. The local SEO work for contractors comes from the same place: knowing which searches turn into booked jobs.

We do not publish map rankings for contractors, because we have none on file to show. The free review will tell you where you stand today. See also our wider local SEO services and Google Business Profile optimization.

How we set a contractor up

  1. Pick the jobs that pay

Which jobs you want more of, which towns you want them in, and which ones you would rather not drive to.

  2. Set the profile up for a service-area business

Hidden address if you work from home, a service area that matches where you go, and the categories and services for your trade.

  3. Build a page per job

Roof replacement, AC repair, panel upgrade: one page each, with what the job involves, how it goes and photos of your own work.

  4. Track the calls

Every call and form from Google counted, so you can tell a lead that books from a tire-kicker and spend where the jobs come from.

Common questions

I work out of my house. Can I still show up in the map?

Yes. Set the profile up as a service-area business, hide the home address, and list the areas you serve. Google still uses your real location when deciding who to show, so you tend to show best closest to home.

Should I make a page for every town I serve?

Only for towns where you have something real to say: jobs you have done there, the kind of homes, the drive time. A page that swaps the town name into the same text gets ignored.

Is local SEO or Google Ads better for a contractor?

Ads bring calls this week; SEO builds calls you do not pay for each time. Most contractors who grow do both, and the ads data shows which jobs and towns are worth the SEO work.

Which trades do you work with?

Contractors and home services: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, remodeling and similar trades, plus other local service businesses.
