Local SEO Agency vs Doing It Yourself

What a local business can handle on its own, what is worth paying for, and how to decide between an agency and doing local SEO yourself.

Doing local SEO yourself makes sense if you have one location, a short list of services, a few hours a month, and the patience to keep at it. Hiring an agency makes sense when you have several locations or many services and towns, when your trade is crowded in your city, when your profile or listings are a mess, or when your time is worth more running jobs than writing pages. Many owners do a mix: they handle reviews and photos themselves and pay for the setup, the pages and the tracking.

Here is how to tell which camp you are in.

What you can do yourself

A lot of local SEO is not technical. It is consistent, careful work.

  • Your Google Business Profile. Category, services, hours, photos, posts and replies. Our Google Business Profile optimization checklist walks through every item.
  • Reviews. Only you and your team can ask customers. This is the most valuable habit in local SEO and it costs nothing. See how to get more Google reviews.
  • Photos. Take them on every job. Nobody else can.
  • Basic listings. Checking that your name, address and phone match on the main directories.

If that list covers what is holding you back, you may not need anyone.

What is harder to do well yourself

  • Writing service and area pages that are useful to customers and clear to Google. It takes time, and thin pages do nothing. See service area pages that actually rank.
  • Website fixes: speed, mobile layout, page structure, the details Google reads.
  • Tracking calls and forms so you can see what is working. Without this, you are guessing.
  • Cleaning up messy listings, duplicates and old addresses across many sites.
  • Reading the market. Seeing why the businesses above you rank and what it would take to pass them.
  • Running ads alongside SEO, and using the ads data to decide which jobs and towns to go after.

The real cost of doing it yourself

The cost is your time and your attention. An hour on a profile is an hour not quoting, not on a job, not with your family. For some owners that trade is fine. For others the work slips after a busy month and the profile goes quiet.

The other cost is mistakes. Keyword-stuffing a business name, buying a review package or using a fake address can get a profile suspended. An agency should know the rules well enough to keep you clear of them.

The real cost of an agency

Money, obviously. See how much local SEO costs for how pricing works. But also the risk of paying for work you cannot see. Plenty of local businesses have paid for months of “optimization” and received a rankings report and nothing else.

You avoid that by hiring carefully. Our questions to ask before hiring a local SEO company are built for exactly this.

A simple way to decide

Answer these honestly.

  • How many locations do you have? One leans DIY. Several leans agency.
  • How many services and towns do you want calls for? A few leans DIY. Many leans agency.
  • Is your profile, site and listings in decent shape today? If yes, maintenance may be enough. If not, the setup is usually worth paying for.
  • How crowded is your trade in your city? If the businesses above you are strong, you will need more work, more often.
  • Will you actually do it every month? Be honest. A plan you drop after a busy season is worth less than a smaller plan that keeps going.
  • Do you know what each call is worth? If one booked job pays for months of work, the decision is easier.

A monthly routine if you go it alone

If you decide to do it yourself, a short routine beats a big push now and then.

  • Every job: take photos and send the review link.
  • Every week: reply to new reviews and answer any questions on the profile.
  • Every month: post an update, add new photos, check hours and details are still right, and look at the calls and website clicks in your profile’s performance view.
  • Every few months: search your main services from a few places in your area and see who shows above you, and add or improve one service page.

The mix that works for many owners

A common split that works well:

  • You: reviews, photos, replying to reviews, telling the agency about new services and towns.
  • The agency: profile setup and checks, service and area pages, listings, tracking, reporting on calls, and ads if you run them.

This keeps the work only you can do with you, and puts the time-heavy, technical work with someone who does it every day.

What a good agency should give you

  • Named work each month, not “ongoing optimization.”
  • Reporting on calls, leads and booked jobs, not only rankings.
  • Everything in your name: profile, site, tracking, ad accounts.
  • No promise of a map position.
  • A short notice period.
